 Opportunity Snapshot

You're a hard-working team player who is itching for the right opportunity to demonstrate your leadership potential. Here is that opportunity. . .

A successful company. . .
Teacher Created Materials (TCM) publishes quality-research based, educational books and materials in all curricular areas for teachers and students at all grade and skill levels. We're a successful, privately held business with warehouse operations based in Huntington Beach, California.

A non-conventional entry level management role in operations/warehousing. . .
The Warehouse Supervisor position is a newly created role, and has both tactical and strategic responsibilities. Tactically, you will oversee our warehouse workers and warehouse facilities, including the receipt, storing, and distribution of products, both finished goods and components requiring assembly. Strategically (and this is where the role gets interesting!), you will work with the COO to take our operations to the next level by researching and proposing new warehousing solutions, from simple storage changes to implementing a Warehouse Management System. A high impact career opportunity. . .
Our warehouse is running smoothly in support of today's business environment, with an experienced team on board. What we need from you is a hands-on approach to taking this operation to the next level, as we get into new distribution channels and increased customization offered to our customers.

Our Requirements

  • Experience in progressive supervisory positions is preferred.
  • Strong inter-personal skills demonstrating the ability to lead, manage, direct, motivate and develop direct reports.
  • PC skills in Excel and Word' some prior experience with automated fulfillment and shipping systems.
Key Attributes
We're looking for potential as much as your prior experience. The key qualities we're looking for evidence of include:
  • An ability to lead through example (this is a very hands-on role!!)
  • A sense of pride in a job well done
  • Creative problem solving abilities
  • The maturity and flexibility to work with all levels of staff
  • The ambition to build a career in operations - not just warehouse management.

More About Your Role

Today, we have approximately 25,000 square feet of warehouse space, and we recently expanded into a second warehouse across the street. You'll spend the majority of your time in the warehouse, supervising and working alongside three full-time and one part-time employee (we also bring in temps during our busiest seasons). Quick question for you - click here

Your hours will most likely be Monday to Friday from 7:30am - 3:30pm with the opportunity to earn overtime, particularly during our busy season which runs from April to June.

Our products are primarily pre-packed educational kits, making picking and loading relatively straightforward. However, we also have some kits that require assembly since we may source out specific components overseas. We also do a fair amount of customer customization, which can vary from special packaging requirements to custom built kits. A typical day might require fulfilling as few as 20-50 orders, but we ship as many as 100 or more on a busy day.

As a key member of the operations team, you will have ample opportunity to learn about all aspects of our operations, and will be expected to offer suggestions on how changes made in other parts of the company can contribute to a more efficiently run warehouse.

Your specific duties as the Supervisor will be to:
  • Set up workload, schedule personnel, document workers' productivity, and provide leadership and training
  • Set standards and evaluate employee performance against those standards.
  • Oversee the receipt and selection of storage locations for in-coming product, ensuring we make maximum use of available space.
  • Ensure orders are properly pulled and packed, with minimal errors and good efficiency.
  • Ensure orders are shipped on-time and via most cost-effective shipper.
  • Oversee the assembly of kits, either in-house or via a third party, on products we do not buy as finished goods.
  • Conduct cycle counts and special product counts as directed by management.
  • Ensure cleanliness of warehouse during and at end of shift.
  • Ensure all safety standards are adhered to during designated shift.
  • Responsible for proper completion of all documentation (attendance reports, out of stock reports, productivity reports, load documentation, etc.)
  • Manage the entire operation in the absence of the COO
  • Work with Inventory Control to ensure the highest level of inventory accuracy possible
  • Plan inbound and outbound schedules accordingly to meet customer needs
While performing these duties, you will be constantly on the lookout for ways to improve operations. For example, our picking and packing has been able to function well as a manual operation until now, but is it time to invest in a scanning system, and/or a Warehouse Management System? Or, is there a better way for us to utilize the space we have? These are the kinds of questions you will research and work together with the COO to solve.

If this sounds like the right mix of challenge and opportunity for you, we look forward to hearing from you!

More About Our Company

Teacher Created Materials is a publishing company, and everything we do comes from teachers and is created just for them. Our mission is to publish quality-research based, educational books and materials in all curricular areas for teachers and students at all grade and skill levels. TCM provides a broad spectrum of both quality resources and professional teacher training. While remaining grounded in sound educational practice, we maintain an educational vision and an open ear to educators and their changing needs.

When Teacher Created Materials was founded in 1977, it was started by two classroom teachers looking to share their ideas and passion with their colleagues. The seeds they planted have blossomed into the vibrant and dynamic publishing company we know today. Privately and family owned since its conception, TCM is still run by teachers for teachers, and that will never change.
